Champagne Ride As tradition has it, we celebrate the past years riding with some bubbly at the lookout point below Paarl Rock. This is the highlight of the year and not to be missed. It should take the average rider about about 55min to the lookout point. You're welcome to leave a bit earlier or later just be at the lookout point at 5:55. The posted departure point is the Vineyard Spar, but if it is more convenient for you to ride up from Northern Paarl and meet us at the lookout point you're welcome to do so. Let’s see if we can get to the magical 100 riders this year. Spread the word and encourage your friends to join.Bring some bubbles / juice or whatever

Dear Moms, Dads, Boys and Girls,   You are invited to enter for the first Hermanus Rotary/ Wildekrans Wine Estate MTB Adventure sponsored by Isipani Construction on Sunday the 7th of August. The event is aimed at young and old, those riders who enjoy single track ,not technical, but still providing sufficient exercise to achieve your personal goal on the day. It is not a timed event so everyone can relax and enjoy the beauty of the Botriver Valley.   The 43 km route takes you through the most scenic parts of the Wildekrans farm and the beauty of it is that you will not leave the borders of the farm or cross any of the public roads in the vicinity nor  any doubling up of the single track. Climbing is limited to less than 750 metres, so come and enjoy yourselves with your young ones who can also do a 5 km or 10 km loop on the farm.    Please note the following:     •       The Start/Finish venue is on the Wildekrans Farm situated at the link road between the N2 and the R45 in Botriver.      •  REGISTRATION is Saturday from 9h00 - 12h00  at the De Wet Hall in Onrus River and Sunday morning 06h00 - 7h00 at the Wildekrans Farm..             Wildekrans has an excellent restaurant ( www.wildekrans wine estate.com ) and if you are planning to have lunch on Sunday why don't you book at the restaurant. Burgers will be served for those not so hungry and a full menu will be available for those who wish to spend a bit more time on the farm.     •       Accommodation is availble on the farm for those who wish to spend the weekend in Botriver.       START from 08h00 (Fast Categories start at 08h00 and the rest of categories 5 min apart);     •       Ample PARKING is very near the Start & Finish ;     •       Trust you will enjoy your ride, it is an exciting new route built by Wildekrans farm workers and not extreme.   We look forward to welcome you at Wildekrans Wine Estate and trust that your day will be fun filled and enjoyable.   Rotary Club of Hermanus  Alex 082 8076800 /  Johan 083 6263081 /  Sandra 082 9247254

Cycling against violent crime on our mountain on Saturday 30 May Over the last months there have been numerous reports of violent crime against innocent cyclists, joggers and other locals on our beautiful Paarl Mountain.  Just last week a young woman was brutally raped by three men while jogging in Jan Phillips Drive. This is unacceptable.  We cannot allow ourselves to be driven off the mountain by criminals.  We have to take a stand and demand regular police patrols on the mountain. Although Saturday mornings are usually used for longer rides, we urge you to take the time to join us for a protest ride, run or walk on this coming Saturday.  We have to stand together to increase public awareness and to force the police to step up to the plate.  We will be departing from the parking area in front of Vineyard Spar at 08:00 and head for Victoria dam on Jan Philips. Even if you cannot take part we urge you to log on to our website and add your name to the list to be added to the petition. For those who would like a longer ride, I’ll be leaving from the spar at 6:30 for an up and over from the North,  join the petition ride at 8 then continue with another up and over, finishing with a “Koei se Pad”

End of Year Champagne Ride We have an annual celebratory ride on the last Friday before the end of year school holidays. We head up the mountain to the lookout point below the rock. We toast the past riding year with the valley on view in all its splendour. Last year saw 74 riders attending this ride; let’s see if we can get a 100 PaarlMTB’ers this year. Spread the word and encourage your friends to join. Bring some bubbles / juice or whatever meets your fancy ......and a glass.(Not Francois - plastic cup for him) If you are planning to ride, please sign up for it, if something happens that prevents you from riding we won’t hold it against you!! (Louis). So……… Login and add your name to the list and join the PaarlMTB Festive Cheer! ... Please note the date of this ride is the 7th December

I'm posting this ride on behalf of the newly formed beginners group. During the past couple of weeks we saw quite a few new faces pitching for these rides. Unfortunately only a few are registered PaarlMTB riders and are not receiving these ride notifications. If you know of such riders, please encourage them to register. Mondays ride will be an easy Nederburg loop. Wednesdays ride will be a new, slightly tougher route.PS: As I'm doing the posting on behalf of the newly formed group, I might not be on Mondays ride but definitely on Wednesdays.

Monday Morning Beginners Ride:If you made the new year's resolution to improve your health, lose weight and to start cycling, but you're not sure about your fitness levels or where you would slot in with PaarlMTB, then this is the ride for you. This is a beginners ride (we all started there) and the route is flat, except for one short, gentle climb. The pace will be slow and easy. The policy at PMTB is that we wait for all. If you find that this ride is not challenging enough for you, then choose another ride posting.  On Wednesday we had 6 ride postings, ranging from beginners to the advanced mountain and road bike rides. One of the best ways to stay motivated is by joining a group.Mondays Route:Leave at 5:00 from the Spar, North on main street, right towards Malmesbury,  ±500m then left, Boland cellars, left onto main street, left down Retief street, Meadow feeds, Arboretum, Mall and back to the Spar. If you want to wait on route, you are welcome to do so.Brugstraat @ 5:05Mc Donalds @ 5:10Checkers N-Paarl @ 5:20I'll also be posting a similar ride for Wednesday, starting at 5:15 from the Vineyard Spar, this gives the Northern Paarl riders time to get to the start. The route will be a  shortened Nederburg loop.Hopefully thereafter, the newly formed group will start posting their own rides.Food for Thought:Cycling improves your health, well-being and your quality of lifeCycling is a great way to lose weightCycling is a way of lifeCycling is funCycling is cheaper than a by-passPlease encourage your family and friend who would like to start cycling to join the ride. All fitness levels, ladies and juniors welcome, nobody will be dropped. For those who don't know, Andre v R had a bad fall yesterday morning. He's okay but still in hospital with a fractured pelvis. Traditionally, Friday morning rides were reserved for the beginners, novices and juniors. I think we should reinstate this and post our rides in such a manner to encourage all types of riders in joining these rides. One of the main reasons behind PaarlMTB was getting like minded mtbikers riding and socializing together. Let try and achieve this by putting aside our training programs and going on a 'lekker rustige' social ride once a week on a Friday. For tomorrow's ride, I'm limited with route options as there's one man with slicks - (jy weet wie jy is, raak ontslae daarvan) thus the Nederburg loop, for those who don't know the route, follow the link below. For the interval junkies, there's the option of an up and over from the north. Our webmaster, Lewis, spends a huge amount of his time developing and tweeting the website - thanks Lewis. If you are planning on joining the ride, the least you can do is logon and add your name to the list. This will also encourage others in joining and posting rides. http://veloroutes.org/bikemaps/?route=18561 Hope to see some new and old faces tomorrow.

Traditionally, a Friday morning ride was for the beginner. A ride where we put our personal training program, agendas, pride aside and go on a  social, easy paced ride. During the past year this fell to the wayside and I think we should try to reinstate these rides. The Route: Jan Philips from the south to the T junction where we all stop and regroup. You can then decide if you would like to go down north or back south the same way.I would like to encourage all, ‘ou manne …en dames ingesluit’ to sign up and join the ride. If you have made it to Victoria dam then you can make it to the picnic spot junction. We have enough lights in the group to get everyone safely up and down the mountain.Let’s try and break our previous record of 24 riders.

The route is 110km, all gravel with some serious climbing. We wait for each other and support vehicles will follow us for the entire trip. We estimate that we will be in Sutherland by 18h00. If we stay over, it will be on a friends farm, rough camping style with a braai, beer etc. Leave early the next morning to be back in Paarl before lunch. At this stage we are 6 cyclist with 2 support vehicle and have space for 2 more cyclists. We can accommodate one more support vehicle. (driver and 4 cyclists) I anyone is interested in taking the two vacant spots or would like to join us, complete with support vehicle, please contact me. 082 822 5268 trevor@clift.co.za.
